think SF should just buy an inland town and give the welfare handouts and dispense pure pharmaceuticals to registered addicts there. Instead, the City houses probationers next to the tourist zone (since no other neighborhood would tolerate that), and nonprofit housing has tied up thousands of apartments for people who don’t *have* to be or work downtown.
Indeed, Tenderloin Housing Clinic does in fact take housing stock away from working people and convert SRO’s into solely welfare hotels. This building used to house ONLY working people. Since THC took over management, it now houses ONLY welfare people. You cannot rent from here if you already have a job.
In fact, when I first moved here in 1995, I couldn’t get in unless I had a job, and I did. there was over 100 working people here at least, and probably more. In 2001, when it was sold to the Patels, and then taken over by THC, nearly all of the working people have left, and some of them told me they left because they got disgusted at how far downhill the place got.
That’s pretty much why Tenderloin Housing Clinic will not allow working people in here. Because if they did, the complaints would skyrocket, and there would likely be numerous lawsuits. So they have to make this exclusively welfare, where everybody is browbeaten into submission, and nobody complains
they didn’t count on me tho. I’m stubborn :)
All working people should be extremely concerned about this, as housing prospects are slowly being eaten away by Randy Shaw.. Kind of ironic for a ‘tenant advocate’, huh?
