CW Nevius wrote and article on Saturday called Backlash against sex club in Tenderloin which itself turned into a backlash against Nevius and Randy Shaw, who was quoted in the article as saying ‘people are mad as hell’
Now at 290+ comments, it’s become obvious that most people aren’t buying the arguments and people already see the hypocrisy. It’s not just hypocrisy, it’s also mistakes made by Nevius an others.
This is the front of the Power Exchange that very same night, Saturday, September 12, 2009, at 9:15pm, just after the club opened
If Nevius and any of the so called activists in the tenderloin had bothered to go down there and check it out for themselves, while the club is open, they would have seen the same thing that H Brown of SF Bulldog and Pot Talk TV, who lives right across the street has been documenting on video since it opened last week
As you can see from the photo, the entire sidewalk on that first block of Mason is devoid of anybody except for Power Exchanges own security guards. They are out there all night because they don’t want the crack dealers that used to be out there hassling the customers, and of course, crack dealers don’t like being watched. Because of this, that block of Mason is now one of the safest in the Tenderloin, while the club is open. As it’s become obvious from the comments, people don’t care about what happens inside the club, they care about what happens outside the club, on a public street
Nevius also didn’t check his facts
When the Power Exchange, a club where patrons pay a fee to engage in or watch sex acts, moved into the old Crash Club at 34 Mason St. last week, the North of Market/Tenderloin Community Benefit District wasn’t even notified. The club’s workers just moved in, opened for business, and apparently assumed that no one would say a word.
That’s because the Power Exchange isn’t in the North of Market/Tenderloin Community Benefit District, it is in the Central Market Community Benefit District
This is a map of the Central market CBD. The Power Exchange is on the east side of Mason, just below the ‘D" in "CBD" (where the pink highlight portion extends in a finger at the top just to the north of Market)
This also means that because the Power Exchanged moved in there and the property was unused for quite awhile, the Central market CBD will now get tax money, approved through the San Francisco Board of Supervisors, for cleanup of the central market corridor
“People are mad as hell and not going to take it anymore,” said Randy Shaw, executive director of the Tenderloin Housing Clinic
What people are mad as hell about is this.
This is the murder scene on the sidewalk in front of Randy Shaws own Vincent Hotel last Thursday in a drug related killing (photo credit Elihuh2001). The is the same Tenderloin Housing Clinic that runs beyondchron advocating turning the Tenderloin into a Hamsterdam, which was nearly copied verbatim in the comments on this Nevius article, and received probably the largest negative reviews of all the comments, on top of numerous comments against Randy Shaw himself, simply for making a comment in the article
as for the liquor stores and Tenderloin Housing Clinic leading the charge against them, that’s fine, but very hypocritical because this is one of Tenderloin Housing Clinics own buildings, the Hartland Hotel at 909 Geary. It has both a liquor store and a bar in the same building housing formerly homeless residents
What Paul Hogarth and Randy Shaw of beyondchron never told anybody is that Tenderloin Housing Clinic itself is being sued over nuisance related to the Gangway bar – a liquor establishment, initially started as a tenant complaint about noise > klee.v.lee.pdf (PDF) and triggered a cross complaint against Tenderloin Housing Clinic from the bar > klee.v.lee.cross.compl.pdf (PDF)
In this cross complaint The Gangway bar is accusing Tenderloin Housing Clinic of evading responsibility under it’s contract as a ‘master lease’ of the Hartland Hotel
and there’s much much more about the hypocrisy involved, but that might be better served in future posts
