boys and girls,
Tomorrow (Wednesday, January 19th 2011) the
John Stewart Company contractors will begin major
logging of the forest on Yerba Buena Island. Here
is the notice given residents.They claim they need no permits because the
trees (many are magnificent 100 plus year old
Monterey pine)are not native. In fact, they
are clearing views for the development planned
atop the hill which is presently sealed off from
prying cameras such as Tony De Renzo and I took
up there last week.Some of you (such as Will Kane and the Chronicle)
could stop this if you wanted. Just one TV crew
led by Dan Noyes would halt the destruction.Will you act?
I’ve done all that I can. Stewart says they need
no City permission because technically, since the
developer (Lennar – surprised?) hasn’t yet made a
payment to the Navy to change official ownership
and the Navy doesn’t give a shit what happens to
the trees.You may need a helicopter to film this because the
security around the site is heavy now.What a fucking travesty.

In an-going effort to improve the quality of life on
Treasure Island, a vegetation management project on Yerba Buena Island has begun.
The project includes pruning and removing of specific
trees on Yerba Buena Island. The project will begin Monday, January 10, 2011 and will
end Tuesday, March 1, 2011 and will be completed in five phases. Weather conditions
may affect this schedule. Work will start daily at approximately 8:00 am and finish at
approximately 4:30 pm.
Phase two has begun.
On Wednesday January the 19th and Thursday the 20th, 2011
street lights along Treasure Island Road (The Causeway) will be out. Caution should be
observed while driving along this route. Also, the posted speed limit of 25
miles per hour should be strictly observed.
This is a significant project that will require the use
of heavy equipment. Access along Treasure Island Road (The Causeway) will be reduced to
one lane at various times throughout the project. Expect
general construction related noise, debris, and delays.
Additional notices will be sent as the project progresses
and work locations change.
Please be advised the indicated work areas are hazardous.
Individuals should remain clear of the areas at all time.

I did on Yerba Buena Island today. Keep in
mind that you need a permit to take down a tree
anywhere in the City. Is this a rogue operation?
I don’t have a tall soap box. Others of you do
and I’ll share my info with any of you.Dig the video from this morning.
Which is as far as we’ll take it.
Other than maybe go do a picnic or two there and
watch them cut down the forest. It’s a great
view from that hill.And, getting better, what with all the trees dropping.

and then somebody contacted Eric Mar about it
contacted eric mar, whose aide got back to me and found out it’s (supposedly)
all on the up and up w/ the input of an arborist–to cut down unhealthy
trees…and it’s on federal land so no city input necessary. i hope that’s a
true assessment.

This just in,
No, sorry Daniele but what I hear is that there
is a plan to build a hotel on top of the hill and
that the trees would block the ‘world class’ view
for tourists. Tony and I walked the whole side of
the mountain and got lots of good shots of perfectly
healthy old growth trees that have been spray painted
for removal because they’re in the way of the view.Don’t believe their bullshit.
