from today’s chronicle

the numbers of people adversely affected by Care not Cash are growing

They haven’t hit my block (Geary at Hyde) as I just passed an open-air drug market about a half hour ago (3:00 p.m. on a Monday). And when I was coming home from work around midnight last night, about 20 cop cars had blocked off Geary between Hyde and Leavenworth due to a shooting that DIDN’T EVEN MAKE THE NEWS TODAY. (Upon entering my building, I was greeted by two exiting SFPD officers with huge assault rifles strapped across their chests, who had been searching my gorgeous, well-maintained and very expensive building for the shooters.) Unfortunately the mayor’s Care Not Cash program has made my life a living hell as the most incorrigible of the street people now have a home at the Hotel Union, attracting predatory drug dealers 24/7. And Kamala Harris — who I once supported philosophically — has only made it worse by her refusal to support prosecution of these crimes. And they ARE crimes. I predict a huge conservative backlash in this city, starting with me.
