Doug Sahm’s Phantom Playboys, October, 7, 2012, Hardly Strictly Bluegrass
This is something special. Doug Sahm was the founder of the Sir Douglas Quintet and their big hit (at least here in SF) was Mendocino in 1969. Even though Doug Sahm was from Texas, he came to San Francisco in the 60’s to play music. Sahm died in 1999, but the legacy lives on because Boz Scaggs brought a bunch of Texas music veterans to San Francisco for apparently a one time only event for Hardly Strictly Bluegrass and pulled it off with flying colors. All of these musicians already have their own tour schedule, including Scaggs, so this could not have been easy and it may never happen again
The band that played HSB was DOUG SAHM’S PHANTOM PLAYBOYS featuring: Dave Alvin, Steve Earle, Delbert McCLinton, Boz Scaggs, Jimmie Vaughan..
