Slab City, California is near the Salton Sea and is full of interesting people who seek the alternative lifestyle. The only problem is it's next to a military bombing range although they don't bomb nearby, they do often have helicopter excersises nearby so it can get noisy sometimes. Also very hot in summer. Other than that, it's worth a visit

certain things start making you do a double take, like this dwelling in a converted military bunker

The Shoe Tree tells you this is definitely not your normal RV park
Then things get interesting
unexploded ordnance helps keep people from wandering too far into the bombing range next door
the helicopters help cure the desert silence
But the best part of Slab City is hands down, East Jesus which is an art installation and I got the tour and this post is in support of their efforts to buy the land from the State of California so they can stay there forever. You can support them at their website via the link
