The song was never recorded in the studio or released on any album, but was well known to be performed live in concert among fans. There is even a bootleg called Dark Magic (pictured) which has another version live from the late 60’s

This version is extra special, as it was done at Skip Spences memorial service. Skip died in 1999 and this song was recorded on April 30, 1999. It was attended by many people in the music industry and was semi private and likely will never be officially released.. That’s mostly up to his surviving family, including Omar Spence, his son, who is currently jamming with Moby Grape The memorial concert was held at Brookdale lodge in felton, California. Four people recorded the show off the soundboard, all plugged in to the same board in series. I was one of the four people

Dark Magic was and is considered one of Skips masterpieces. It’s the type of song that can be done many different ways and is considered the most Pink Floyd-ish of all the Grape songs and demonstrates the incredible range of this band, from country to punk to rock and roll to blues and psychedelia. They did and continue to do it all.

Moby Grape – Dark Magic, April 30, 1999, Brookdale Lodge, Felton California

Moby.Grape.Dark.Magic.4.30.99.mp3

the violin you hear is David LaFlamme of It’s A Beautiful Day and Tiran Porter of the Doobie Brothers played bass along with the original bassist, Bob Mosely.
