{"id":351,"date":"2008-05-25T14:10:35","date_gmt":"2008-05-25T14:10:35","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.bluoz.com\/blog\/?p=351"},"modified":"2008-05-25T14:10:35","modified_gmt":"2008-05-25T14:10:35","slug":"Fraud-in-non-profits","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.bluoz.com\/blog\/2008\/05\/25\/Fraud-in-non-profits\/","title":{"rendered":"Fraud in non profits"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>From the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2008\/03\/29\/us\/29fraud.html?_r=1&#038;scp=1&#038;sq=strom+light&#038;st=nyt&#038;oref=slogin\">New York Times<\/a><\/p>\n<p><em><strong>&#8220;Most of these things are not caught by routine audits<\/strong>,&#8221; said Gary Snyder, who tracks nonprofit fraud in his newsletter, Nonprofit Imperative. &#8220;They&#8217;re usually done by someone in the financial area \u2014 the treasurer, the bookkeeper, the signer of checks \u2014 who knows how to avoid getting caught.&#8221; <a class='serendipity_image_link' href='http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Fraud-Abuse-Nonprofit-Organizations-Prevention\/dp\/0471446157'><!-- s9ymdb:259 --><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"serendipity_image_right\" width=\"314\" height=\"475\" style=\"float: right; border: 0px; padding-left: 5px; padding-right: 5px;\" src=\"\/blog\/uploads\/nonprofit-fraud-abuse.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Almost 95 percent of the reported frauds entailed loss of cash, and a majority of those involved false or inflated invoices, billing for expenses that were never incurred and check tampering.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I gave a talk to a group of nonprofit executives a few weeks ago, and every single one of them had a fraud story to tell,&#8221; said one of the report&#8217;s authors, Janet S.
