Tomorrow (Wednesday, January 19th 2011) the
\nJohn Stewart Company contractors will begin major
\nlogging of the forest on Yerba Buena Island. Here
\nis the notice given residents.<\/p>\n

They claim they need no permits because the
\ntrees (many are magnificent 100 plus year old
\nMonterey pine)are not native. In fact, they
\nare clearing views for the development planned
\natop the hill which is presently sealed off from
\nprying cameras such as Tony De Renzo and I took
\nup there last week.<\/p>\n

Some of you (such as Will Kane and the Chronicle)
\ncould stop this if you wanted. Just one TV crew
\nled by Dan Noyes would halt the destruction.<\/p>\n

Will you act?<\/p>\n

I’ve done all that I can. Stewart says they need
\nno City permission because technically, since the
\ndeveloper (Lennar – surprised?) hasn’t yet made a
\npayment to the Navy to change official ownership
\nand the Navy doesn’t give a shit what happens to
\nthe trees.<\/p>\n

You may need a helicopter to film this because the
\nsecurity around the site is heavy now.<\/p>\n

Please see below for the Resident Advisory notice:
\n In an-going effort to improve the quality of life on
\nTreasure Island, a vegetation management project on Yerba Buena Island has begun.
\n The project includes pruning and removing of specific
\ntrees on Yerba Buena Island. The project will begin Monday, January 10, 2011 and will
\nend Tuesday, March 1, 2011 and will be completed in five phases. Weather conditions
\nmay affect this schedule. Work will start daily at approximately 8:00 am and finish at
\napproximately 4:30 pm.
\n Phase two has begun.
\n On Wednesday January the 19th and Thursday the 20th, 2011
\nstreet lights along Treasure Island Road (The Causeway) will be out. Caution should be
\nobserved while driving along this route. Also, the posted speed limit of 25
\nmiles per hour should be strictly observed.
\n This is a significant project that will require the use
\nof heavy equipment. Access along Treasure Island Road (The Causeway) will be reduced to
\none lane at various times throughout the project. Expect
\ngeneral construction related noise, debris, and delays.
\n Additional notices will be sent as the project progresses
\nand work locations change.
\n Please be advised the indicated work areas are hazardous.
\nIndividuals should remain clear of the areas at all time.

\nall on the up and up w\/ the input of an arborist–to cut down unhealthy
\ntrees…and it’s on federal land so no city input necessary. i hope that’s a

This just in,<\/p>\n

No, sorry Daniele but what I hear is that there
\nis a plan to build a hotel on top of the hill and
\nthat the trees would block the ‘world class’ view
\nfor tourists. Tony and I walked the whole side of
\nthe mountain and got lots of good shots of perfectly
\nhealthy old growth trees that have been spray painted
\nfor removal because they’re in the way of the view.<\/p>\n
