San Francisco Facility Progression

1999–2026 • an interactive chronology of documented physical sites and milestones

What this map shows

This interactive map shows the documented progression of San Francisco homelessness, supportive-housing and related service facilities from 1999 through 2026. Drag the timeline—or press Play—to watch sites enter the documented system over time.

The chronology is cross-referenced against the historical physical-site GIS inventory. A dot appears when a site reaches its first documented milestone in the progression dataset. It should therefore be read as a map of the growth and geographic development of the institutional footprint, not as a claim that every displayed facility remained continuously open through the selected year.

Basemap unavailable — progression data is still active.
1999
1999200520102015202020252026
A site appears when its first documented progression event is reached. This is a progression chronology, not yet a definitive active/open-in-that-year inventory.

How to read it

Dots represent physical sites, not contracts or programs. Multiple milestones can belong to the same property, which is why the event count is higher than the mapped-site count.

The next research layer can distinguish changes in institutional control and use—including scattered-site housing, master leasing, nonprofit operation, nonprofit ownership and permanent supportive housing. Where historical evidence is incomplete, the status should remain unknown rather than inferred.

Basemap: OpenStreetMap. Facility coordinates and chronology come from the project GIS and progression datasets.
