529 Stevenson shaping up
527-529 Stevenson in Mid Market is now two pieces and it looks like there's not much left to remove. The planning documents mention a courtyard, so this is probably it
Bonus, in the background they are right now repainting 1045 Mission, aka, the Soma Residences to the dark red/burgundy on the left

This is what it looked like back in April 2010. It was warehouse that used to have a Chinese garment factory in it for many years

The upside down U.S. flag is an official signal of distress. It is not meant to be, and is not officially recognized as any type of disrespect when so displayed for the right reasons. To the contrary, here is the relevant part of the US Code of Laws regarding how to fly the flag when in distress:
THE FLAG CODE
Title 36, U.S.C., Chapter 10
As amended by P.L. 344, 94th Congress
Approved July 7, 1976
ยง 176. Respect for flag: No disrespect should be shown to the flag of the United States of America; the flag should not be dipped to any person or thing. Regimental colors, State flags, and organization or institutional flags are to be dipped as a mark of honor.
(a) The flag should never be displayed with the union down, except as a signal of dire distress in instances of extreme danger to life or property.
Most individuals who have served in the military service of our nation will (or should) recognize this signal.
As a result of the many traitors and enemies we as a free people have, both foreign and domestic, as a result of the many unconstitutional acts, legislation and atrocities passed and/or committed against US citizens and their life, liberty and property, and as a result of policies that have allowed (and continue to allow) enemies of this nation to enter in large numbers through a porous border policy, I believe the life, liberty and property of US Citizens are in dire danger and distress.
for the non military civilians, there's a bit more via answers wiki
An American flag or for that matter any flag flown upside-down is considered a sign of distress...
Mutiny, piracy, sinking, coup, rebellion of the people/government.
The fact that any flag flown upside-down means distress is not the whole story however... flags flown upside-down can and are used as a form of protest.
The flag is a symbol of control and superiority. The use of such in any other way is considered "desecration". . .

1061 Market burglary
Tenants at 1061 Market street were broken into last Friday night and around 5,000 dollars in Apple computer equipment were stolen from a new tech startup. The burglary was caught on video and here's some screen shots in case anyone recognizes him. Click through to enlarge on Flickr

Potter Hotel mural at 9th and Mission
New mural at 1288 Mission Street at 9th, one block from Twitter headquarters on Market. The Potter hotel and one of it's former/current residents was also featured in a little known documentary called Waging a Living 2005. The security guard in the documentary was interviewed at the Potter. No idea if he still lives there
This mural was painted just two weeks ago. You can see it at 9th and Mission street

updated > apparently this mural will be rotating with a new one periodically with no set schedule. The art work is being done by Vogues World and the latest is being done today

San Francisco federal building hit with hip hop graffiti
this happened over the last weekend at the federal building at Mission and 7th, painted right on the ivy plants. Apparently this is in reference to Troy Ave - Sway in the Morning
Updated > this is now removed. They just cut the ivy on the wall. Now the ivy looks a little weird

1019 Market evictions - the beginning
1019 Market has recently been sold and all tenants have been handed 90 day eviction notices. The building is likely to be remodeled for new tech companies at much higher rents. Meanwhile, the current tenants, like this Chinese garment factory that has been there over 20 years is being evicted, and the first of the moving vans have arrived. Remember how mayor Ed Lee said this will create jobs?
But not for these textile workers and there's a very good chance these are the last ones anywhere on or near Mid Market in San Francisco
updated > Curbed reports the new owners are Cannae partners

UN Plaza decorative dumpster art display
Art installation in mid Market/civic Center San Francisco via confetti from May 2012

Permanent rubbish bins add a "decorative touch" to the United Nations Plaza-- and provide a visual and olfactory "welcome" to the Tenderloin. City planners serious about beautifying the Civic Center and the United Nations Plaza need to get rid of them.

Kaplans fire January 4, 1979
This was one of the biggest fires in San Francisco history, and it happened January 4, 1979 in Mid Market at Kaplans, 1055 Market
Kaplans was once a 6 story building, like many of the buildings on that stretch of Market street between 6th and 7th
6 alarms, and it was arson, and the whole building burned to the ground. The owners rebuilt one story and the same owners are still in business today as Kaplans Surplus and still get great reviews on yelp. There's also some reference to the fire and Mid market of the era in this article in Poor magazine by Martha Bridegam

1019 Market street evaluation 1976
1019 Market was recently sold, and nobody knows yet what will become of the building, but here's a historical evaluation of the building circa 1976
update > all of the current tenants have received 90 day eviction notices, and the new owners are tech related and likely will be a complete rehab of the building
Of note is that the photos were taken during the Mid Market beautification and rejuvenation --- in 1976. You can see Market street fenced off as they beautify the sidewalks. Back then it was 1021 Market, but now the official address is 1019 Market. More history and earlier photos of 1019 Market at Up From the Deep
