Sausalito Art Fest 2010 - Sons of Champlin

One of the great San Francisco Bay Area bands, Sons of Champlin is hard to categorize. They have a mix of rock and blues and soul, and are definitely a class act and appear to be getting tighter these days. There seems to be a younger member, pictured here, singing, that does an impressive job and they've been doing a ton of shows around California lately

One note aside from this band but in this recording. There is about 10 minutes of people chatting near the microphone about half way through. This is a scourge, a plague, and a destroyer of live recordings and you can hear it. Why people go to concerts to chat about their home life and chicken recipes is beyond me

One asswipe actually sang into the microphone when I pointed to the microphone. I told him I couldn't erase it and that it's forever. Here's the asswipe who did it. Luckily he left after a few minutes and the rest of the recording is free of excessive audience chatter

there was a second person who spent the entire day telling everybody he could find how great Lynyrd Skynyrd was...Sorry he missed the concert, you know? and so did everybody else near him....Luckily I was able to keep him more than 5 feet away, but you can hear it a little if you listen close...Here's a photo of him in the hat, to the right

Oh yeah, and Paul Kantner came early and sat in the back of the stage for the Sons show. He's apparently a fan of the Sons of Champlin

This show was a little short as Dave got caught up in traffic at SFO and was late, but it was a great show, and included one of my personal favorites, Shouldn't Have Took More Than You Gave, from the Alone Together album. I'm extremely happy I finally got to see Dave Mason live, and just about beside myself that the recording turned out PERFECT!. This is something I will treasure for years to come, and if you like what you hear, join him on Facebook and spread the word. he's playing Yoshi's on October 21

a second version with slightly less bass below 50hz is here. This is because there's slight bottom pop on the bass drum and I don't know what caused it. Nothing was touched during the show and it goes away after about 20 minutes

basically, for those not in the know, this isn't the same as recording at tape or CD quality even tho it's in MP3 'lossy' >>> (the primary recording is the most important, which includes the quality of the microphones used'...You can't get any kind of good quality recording without any of these important basic elements..when a recording is done strictly 24 bit 94 khz then transferred directly to MP3, you're bypassing the CD quality 16 bit - 44khz Redbook standard and going directly to MP3, which isn't a normal process at all :) (it forces a higher bitrate that would not be there going through the normal channels)...from 4.6 megabits per second, direct to mp3

welcome to the new age of live digital recording!

The opening sequence is actually the sound check, and if you listen closely you can hear the drums going up and down the EQ field at the soundboard, more bass, less bass, more bass at 40hz, etc...It's a good example of how the soundboard and the speakers control the sound, and if they don't do a good job, any audience recording won't be as good either....This time they did a good job

Pablo Cruise definitely has the chops, and my personal opinion it's mostly outside of the 'hits' as a jam band..Or rather they can take the songs to more places than what's on the albums..they can jam when they really want to...Very good band, IMHO

best of all, they have a sense of humor about themselves, and their own music

I wouldn't call Pablo Cruise ' soft rock' exactly, these days, even though that's where they made all their money...It seems they worked around that quite well

this is a sneak preview of a very rare 'safety tape' made in 1969 by KQED-TV in San Francisco. A safety tape is simply a backup copy made in real time by the studio that recorded it. It is the only known professional recording that includes all of the 5 original members, David laFlamme, Linda 'neska' LaFlamme, Hal Wagenet, Mitchell Holman and Pattie Santos

Pablo Cruise, Sausalito Arts Fest, September 9, 2000

This concert is special because original bassist and singer Bud Cockrell was there. Bud Cockrell died in March and there's also a facebook tribute page. Bud didn't play much with Pablo Cruise since he left in the 70's after recording the double platinum seller A Place in the Sun, which he wrote, so this is a rare appearance by Bud and possibly his last ever recorded show with Pablo Cruise. Rest in Peace, Bud!
