This video doesn't show the murder, but it does show a black car backing down the alley at 5:30 mark and then the police show up a few minutes later and going down the alley with a flashlight looking for the weapon and asking the trash recyclers if they saw anything

there's a fairly decent chance that this black car belongs to somebody who has been parked in the alley for a month, 24/7, and fraternizing with the local crackheads, including Randy Shaw's own clients at the Seneca, at all hours of the night, every night. There's a pretty good chance this person was nearby even if it isn't the same car
New article this morning about the ongoing problems on 6th street, with hints that passion Cafe at 6th and Stevenson is now struggling

http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/article.cgi?f=/c/a/2010/09/23/BACB1FI0FS.DTL

quite a few comments from people who used to live/work in the area, including this one. I hear it a lot, but don't see it in print that often. There is a lot of people who work for the homeless non profits that start out with good intentions, but after a few years they get that 1000 yard stare

Worked in the heart of that snakepit for six years, taking care of an SRO owned by Mercy Housing. Thought I was doing a good thing at first, came to realize I was just enabling a bunch of drug-addled bullies, not helping unfortunate souls who fell through the cracks through no fault of their own (ran across about three of them the whole time) and propping up the whole poverty pimp system. Was finally attacked, twice, by a pumped-up tweaker. SFPD told me there was no way he'd be prosecuted and to forget about it. Mercy transferred me to an even worse location, demoted me, insinuated that it was all my fault, and hounded me out of the company. The SROs are a loss leader for Mercy; the city will require them to take over a crumbling hellhole in order to acquire a high-profile senior/family building elsewhere. These agencies started out with the best of intentions but it's all about keeping the money rolling in and preserving the organization now, without regard for citizens and staff.

note to Passion Cafe > there are cheap things you can do now
Sixth Street is the sordid stretch of real estate because the law enforcement and the City Hall ALLOW it to be so.
Setting up a 24-hour police kiosk at the corner of Stevenson and Sixth would be a first step in showing the drifters from other parts of the state and country that the city isn't going to tolerate their BS.
SRO hotels, who are making fortunes from the state and city must clean up their facilities and inspectors have to stop looking the other way and shrugging their shoulders.
the real deal on 6th i live there..... ok two Liq stores open 6am drinking starts early and end's late ie 2am.... Crack dealers have in's in some business ie 36-38 the owner is in and hides them... the China Rest ie 82-84 drug dealers sit there all day selling crack. The liq store owners care less they'll sell to anyone no matter how drunk...... one Sonoma charges 25% to cash checks gives credit at a 50% charge he is what greed means in today world...
So by 9am either drunk or high well what's next pis-/sh-t everywhere out of money and looking for a fast buck what ever it takes.. Nuff Said.....

I feel sorry for these guys. I love getting a slice of pizza from Chico's but I can't tell how many times I've had to watch out for someone trying to take it or threatening me for not giving them my change. I talked to the owner a couple times, and he says the cops don't do anything about it, but they'll take their free slice anyway. I feel sorry for them, because the city made it seem like if they moved into the ghetto, the ghetto would get better, but really all the city did is give the ghetto a better class of victims. And the crazy thing is they know where they are from. Most of them are living in the SRO's. I see them every day, hanging out on the street. They bring chairs out of the buildings and hang out. They have their kids with them. But what will the city do about it? Bring in more victims?
So long as this city supports vagrants/addicts allowing them to roam the streets like the animals they are.The problems will only get worse.I ran a business south of market/employed 9 full time employees. The energy it takes to ward off the street people is beyond anyones comprehension.Bottom line It was not worth the effort. I closed the business after 12 years of haggling/day in and out dealing with thefts/vehicle break ins and the daily addicts shooting dope and leaving discarded needles on my cranes/equipt.The city lost my tax revenues and someone who used to care about keeping our street block clean of these problem types.I gained freedom from the responsibilities now live comfy/quiet up in Diamond Heights......Never again will I return to these places and try to run a business
You are so right Toeup. Eventually one wearies of "fighting it" and chooses to live a life of peace and tranquility rather than struggling against intractable and endemic problems.Good for you.
I had a friend who opened a cafe/bookstore on 6th street back in 2000. I helped him get it started and I totally agree with what you're saying. The amount of time and energy, not to mention stress, of dealing with crazy people coming in and trying to freeload meals and just being a plain menace is not worth the cheap rent for the location. My friend shut the place down after only a couple years because he couldn't handle it anymore. He has very far left politics but still that didn't hold him from taking the position that most of those people that live around 6th street should be in jail.
i've lived on natoma at 6th street (between mission and howard) and it does wear on a person and it has gotten worse in the last few years. i've seen a guy pull a gun and shoot a few rounds at someone down the street. personally, i've been threatened by a drunk saying he had a gun, i've been hit twice, and called cracker, h0nkee, and f@gg0t more times than i can count. i've seen more poo, sex, drugs, and drug deals from my apartment deck than i've seen in my 20 years of going to the folsom street fair (and that is not an exaggeration.) the patel slumlords are responsible for illegally dumping more trash than anyone. oh, and the cops? one time a guy who was moving was leaving his broken computers on the sidewalk next to my building. i called the cops. the officer told him -- and i quote -- "there's another alley right over there." that's their attitude.

this is not OK: http://exjay.com/20100901-1635-DSC_0342.html

i'm sick and tired of it (and mad as hell) and i'm fighting back!

I own a business across the street from an unused building. For years it had been a site for heroin dealing, vandalism, aggresive panhandling, multiple assults and batteries, and at least one mugging in broad daylight. This, of course, was not good for business.

So I got a high quality netcam, put the camera feed live on a web site, and informed anybody who cared to listen ( this included neighbors, cops, drug sellers and buyers, etc ). It took several months for the problem to go away.
First to disappear were the most obviously affluent buyers. Then, over several months, there was a gradual decrease in traffic, and the last to leave were the most desperate looking ones of the entire crowd - the stone junkies with half their teeth rotted away.
That was about two years ago. Every month or so, someone shows up, still thinking that it is active. They sit there for an hour or so, then give up and go away.
