Beck, Wilco and Feist do Moby Grape
The song is Little Hands by Alexander 'Skip' Spence of San Francisco's own Moby Grape and the Jefferson Airplane. The musicians are featured this week in Becks Record Club. The original version is on the 1969 album Oar, one of the most notorious solo albums ever made
the original members of Moby Grape and the Doobie Brothers came together to perform another song by Skip Spence, never actually recorded on any album called Dark Magic at his memorial a few years ago in Santa Cruz. The memorial concert was recorded by only 5 people, including myself here at Bluoz and never was released to the public. It still has to get approval by Skip Spence's son, Omar Spence, (and Skips estate administrator, hats off to the mighty LQ...hehe) to release all the tapes to the public, but the one song, Dark Magic, was released earlier here on this blog as It Crawled From the Vault #10 The entire memorial concert was recorded at the Brookdale Lodge in 1999, just after Skippy died
now you know some of, theeee rest of the story
Don't ever tell me that younger musicians don't appreciate the previous generation (their forefathers music, grandpas music)
They certainly do...yes indeed

a tribute to Norton Buffalo
Rest in Peace, brother
Norton Buffalo 1951-2009
Last week at Westfest 2009 in Golden Gate Park, David Denny, another member of the Steve Miller Band (wrote The Stake on Book of Dreams) played a very heartfelt tribute to Norton Buffalo. Norton had recently been diagnosed with cancer and passed away yesterday. The tribute was Back to the Island, a Leon Russell song
here it is
we love you Norton! - David Denny, October 25, 2009, Golden Gate Park, San Francisco
update, Monday, November 2nd, 2009. I received word that Norton Buffalo did actually find out this song was performed in his honor before he died last Friday. On Monday, October 26, 2009, the very next day after Westfest, Norton called David Denny to thank him. But he may have never actually heard the song, unless he was watching on the internet. Norton died 5 days later

Jerry Miller from earlier today at Westfest 2009, Golden Gate Park, San Francisco

update, the Chronicle screwed up about this segment (Joel Selvin would have known the difference)

Jim Post was never a member of Moby Grape. Jerry Miller is the one in the cowboy hat and he was and is, the original and founding member of Moby Grape Jim Post wasn't even at this show. Keith Graves on bass is the guy in the tie dye and Fuzzy John Oxendine on drums and Ed Vance on the B3
