in this issue we have Randy Shaw blaming the redevelopment agency for everything from wasteful spending of tax dollars to keeping drug dealers in the neighborhood
"Third, the Redevelopment Agency stopped listening to the community and adopted a “We Know Best” approach. The imaginative and forward-thinking Agency staff who were involved when the Earthquake Recovery Area was created in 1990 were gone.
Agency staff began acting like Soviet bureaucrats following order from Central Command. And these instructions were to do nothing on 6th but fund nonprofit affordable housing, regardless of the Agency’s original stated goal of creating a mix of incomes on the street.
This meant that anti-crime measures were out, despite the Project Area Committee (PAC) voting to fund such programs. It also meant that promises to create a mix of incomes were ignored, as the Agency sought to confine the poor to the narrow stretch along 6th.
This sounds a lot like Tenderloin Housing Clinic itself, home of BeyondChron, where everything from tenant policy down to the lowly pizzas is dictated by a
"Concentrating nonprofit and low-income housing on 6th Street led to the Agency’s third broken commitment: the revival of area businesses. The Agency’s failure to provide housing for the non-poor denied businesses access to a customer base with disposable income. The elected PAC urged Agency staff to provide at least some mix of moderate income housing on the street, but the Agency never did.
With 6th Street residents unable to support businesses, the successful ventures on the street are the after-hours clubs whereby young hipsters from outside the neighborhood come on to 6th after midnight. This hardly represents the type of neighborhood-serving businesses that the Agency claimed it would bring to the community."
nobody does a better job than Randy Shaw of failing to provide housing for non poor, or working people. If you are a working person, come down and see for yourself. Apply at 34 6th Street for an apartment. You will never, ever, ever be able to get housing here no matter how much you beg for it.. Basically, whatn you have to do is quit your job, become homeless, start doing drugs, and then you can get housing here
Who's fault is that?..Not the redevelopment agency. Nope, not for this building. The blame lies solely on Randy Shaw himself who ONLY allows people on Care not Cash to come in here.
As far as I know, there is no actual law that prevents Tenderloin Housing Clinic from allowing people with jobs to rent here.(because if there is, there's a bigger problem than people realize)) This is purely a policy choice made by Randy Shaw for his benefit, and everyone else' detriment. The exact same thing he's accusing the redevelopment agency of doing, he's doing himself even more so
Second, the Delta Hotel fire in August 1997 left the key 6th and Mission corner vacant for the next several years. This opened the door for the return of the drug activity around the hotel, a problem that negatively impacted the entire area.
It's now 10 years later, the Delta Hotel is now operated by Tenderloin neighborhood Development Corp, is now a clean safe place with very few if any drugs in front or even in the hotel
contrast this with Tenderloin Housing Clinic, where just yesterday there was a big undercover sting right in front this building, almost in the lobby(crack of course), including THC residents getting arrested (care not cash)

The regular monthly meeting of the Human Services Commission was held on Thursday, June 23, 2005 in the Ronald H. Born Auditorium at 170 Otis Street San Francisco.
Scott Walton, Supportive Housing Program Manager, presented the request to renew the contract with Tenderloin Housing Clinic.
On motion by Vice President Martinez, seconded and carried, the Commission granted authorization to renew a contract with
TENDERLOIN HOUSING CLINIC for provision of the Housing First Program to operate Care Not Cash Hotels; during the period of July 1, 2005 through June 30, 2007; in a total contract amount not to exceed $7,553,342.
