It’s musical traffic mayhem

This was originally recorded on one of the early Sony mini disc portable digital recorders back in 1997. (commercially available portable recorders outside of Japan)

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/MiniDisc

(this first generation mini disc, now long out of print and defunct, is now comparable to a current LAME mp3 192kbs) This copy is on a low quality cassette tape that didn’t retain full quality after 15 years. I do know the person who recorded this, but it’s just a real pain to transfer it again for the 5th time for an upgrade (long long story). it’s possible this may happen, since many tapers like him never realized how rare some of these recordings ended up being

this is a Shadowland 1st gen copy from the Sony minidisc master, altho old cassette, the original is still in digital form…in a closet., somewhere in the Mission district in San Francisco

Michael Franti and Spearhead, live at Power to the Peaceful fest, Speedway Meadows, Golden Gate Park, September 9, 2006

This is prompted by the recent announcement that the 2012 Power to the Peaceful fest has been cancelled because of higher fees now charged by the city. An outrageous scandal!. Posted as protest! Pretty soon out door concert fun in Golden Gate Park in San Francisco will be 100 dollars minimum

In honor of Jerry Garcia’s 70th birthday today, David Crosby wrote a poem. There’s also a live birthday broadcast on friday and the official Jerry Day in San Francisco is on Sunday

David Crosby and Jerry Garcia and most of the Grateful Dead were in a band together in late 1970 called David and the Dorks and they also recorded at Wally Heider studios at 245 Hyde in the Tenderloin. David Crosby’s album If Only I Could remember My name was recorded at Wally Heiders as was the Grateful Deads American Beauty. They often sat in each others session along with much of the Jefferson Airplane which resulted in the famous PERRO sessions aka, the Planet Earth Rock and Roll Orchestra

Here’s three shows plus some PERRO tapes

Jerry Garcia at the Jefferson Airplane house, 2400 Fulton street, San Francisco 1969

David and The Dorks rehearsals, the Matrix, San Francisco, 1970

David and the Dorks, live at the matrix, December 15, 1970

Kids and Dogs, remastered HDCD outtake of If I Could Only Remember My Name aka PERRO outtake

The original Kids and Dogs, PERRO sessions at Wally Heider, 245 Hyde st, 1970, unremastered from Paul Kantners tapes

Moby Grape, USDC Gym October 6, 1974

This is probably a typo on the tape and is more likely to be UC San Diego 1974. The Grape played Santa Monica Civic the previous day and is the only show listed at the concert database for 1974. The Santa Monica show probably wasn’t taped, but the poster is below

I attended a Moby Grape show in National City (suburb of San Diego, big
sailor hangout) on August 8, 1974. I remember the date because we watched
Nixon resign on television before going to the show. They were great. It
was the line-up with Johnny Craviotto on drums and Jeff Blackburn in the
Skip spot. I remember JC singing a great version of Gone Dead Train and
Mosely rocked Goin’ Down.

Also, for the very first time since it was aired 12 years ago, VH1, Where Are They Now – Moby Grape segment from 2000.

For people that don’t know the history of Moby Grape and their start in San Francisco, this is worth a watch (Moby Grape did win their rights back in 2006, 6 years after this was aired, which is why you can buy official live albums on Sundazed now for the first time). The Grape also played last night, July 29, 2012, at Louiefest in Tacoma
